Summary

SWWAN wants to bring people of all ages together to discuss, reflect on and visualise the concept ‘culture’ in the broad sense of the word.

Using new methodologies like ICT, film and documentary making, the end product will be a film in which a number of learners of different nationalities will express and visualise their ideas of ‘culture’ and apply this to their own region, other European regions and their own world.

A common (theoretical) framework to start from will be developed in the first phases of the project, while the actual filming will be done by learners of the participating organisations.

As 2009 will be the European year of Creativity and Innovation we hope to contribute to the reawakening of creativity and the further development of innovative methods.

Objectives

The concrete objective is to have a visual representation of how a variety of people see a variety of cultures. After reflecting on, thinking and discussing about a number of concepts related to interculturality in its broad sense we will ask teachers and learners to film their experiences with these issues; not only in their own living and working environment but also in another unknown environment. This way we want to promote and establish tolerance and intercultural awareness.

Subjects that will be addressed during the first workshops are racism, identity, diversity and everything we need to be able to address the concept of interculturality from a wide angle and a broad perspective. The second series of workshops will focus on the art of film and documentary making and then we will brainstorm and put together the general outline of the end product which will be a film on interculturality in Europe. By means of this process of film making we hope to awaken and reinforce creativity.

Intergenerational learning and the confrontation with other nationalities will be part of the project as well, due to the large variety of participants (elderly people, migrant workers, language learners, teacher training students, …).

Problems that we are to address are those that are related to the aforementioned subjects.

The approach will be a combination of the more standard approaches like workshops, debating, discussions, … on the one hand and the more innovative ICT based approach of film and documentary making on the other hand.
